Just Popping in to Say HI!

Spring has finally sprung which means cleaning, planting and getting out of the house!

But, I have managed to get a couple felting projects done as well.

I finished up Tucker's purse.....not that he would have ever carried a purse lol

It is about 5.5" x 5.5". It looks a little wider than tall because it is lying flat so the sides collapsed. I never carry a purse......ever.....but wanted something cute to carry my camera in. I think this fits the bill perfectly. Plus I can also fit a package of tissues. Allergy season ya know!  :-)

 

Also, this past Saturday, my friend Veronica came over to learn needle felting. We had a blast chatting and felting!

 

I forgot to get a pic of her finished project but here is mine. We made little doggie face charms. He is about 2" tall including the ears. I have no idea what I am going to do with him but I am sure eventually he will find a good home. :-) 

 



That's all for now. I am on vacation next week so hopefully I will get a chance to have some quality art time and have lots of goodies to share!

Stab Stab Stab!

Felting is a very addictive thing! It is also very therapeutic!!!  Stabbing away at the wool, you can take out any repressed aggressions or you can just let your mind go and be free!

I get lots of ideas on Pinterest and saw a wonderful felted pendant that I decided I wanted to emulate.  I am still debating whether I need to add something to the heart itself.

And as I thought about what I wanted to create next, I had the desire to try my hand at flat needle felting (as opposed to the 3D stuff I have been doing)

I was sort of cleaning and found a couple old pairs of jeans that I had saved for a future project. Well the future finally arrived and I decided I needed a purse with something felted on the front.

It is has been a long time since I have used my beloved Tucker as a subject but I felt (no pun intended) that it was time.

I first drew an outlined of his little face.

I then traced that onto some muslin. I had some friends tell me that they use water soluble interfacing or some such thing but I didn't have any and didn't want to go buy any....I wanted to do this project with only things I had on hand. Thus the muslin.

I pinned the muslin to the denim and began blocking in colors. I forgot to take a picture of my muslin piece so here it is with his eyes almost done and the white totally complete (notice his chubby cheeks).

 

 

As I neared the edge with my felting, I removed the pin and cut away the muslin, I then felted past the muslin to hold it down and hide it completely. See the inner ear is done below but the edges are still plain muslin.

 

 

Tucker, although he looked like just white with striped areas, actually had quite a few colors in his dark spots! I blocked in the basic tan that seemed to be the underlying color of his coat.

 

 

I then pulled out 4 more browns from my wool stash to create the stripes on his head.  BTW I had to blend colors to create his eyes and inner ears as what I had was just too bright and needed to be toned down.

And here he is felted onto the denim.

Not quite perfect, I see too many flaws, but I am still happy with this first attempt.  :-)

I plan on sewing the purse together tomorrow so hopefully I can get some pictures posted very soon.



Ribbit Ribbit

When I said I wanted to felt a frog I know every single one of you thought.....Yeah right! She hates frogs and all other slimy, icky things!

Well, HA!  I felted a frog!  And I still have no idea why I so desperately wanted to do so! lol

Maybe it is the hope that Spring will soon be here....or that I just really wanted to use my bright green wool.  :-)

So here is your first look at the little guy.  He is about an inch tall and 2 inches long.  As I sit here typing I am thinking I should have taken a picture of his little bright yellow belly lol (maybe later)

Trust me, he is not as blatently fuzzy as he looks......he is just blown  up much bigger than real life! But no, I still have not perfected the completely smooth look. I think my dragon came closest but he is also the largest thing I have felted which I think makes it easier to get the smooth surface.

I seemed to have caught him right in the middle of poofing out his throat. Why do they do that?

Here's hoping that Spring has almost sprung!  :-)

TaaaaDaaaaa!!!!!!

What can I say, sometimes I like to make an entrance! lol

 

It has been quite a while since I have posted anything. I apologize. Between work and health issues I just haven't been in the mood. Not serious health issues....the normal back, neck and I added almost total lack of use of my right shoulder issues. But, I am back and my shoulder is almost pain free....Yay!

 

So, although I have been gone, I have not been a total bum. I struggled to find ideas and my creativity seemed to have totally flown the coop.

That is until I found this adorable book....Collage Couture Techniques for Creating Fashionable Art by Julie Nutting. It totally jumpstarted my creative juices! I have been scribbling in my sketchbook and jotting ideas for many areas I like to play in.

 

But I did actually apply some of her techniques and created a couple works.

 

Here is a page in my art journal. My first attempt at "fashion" design. I just love a day at the beach!

 

I did a watercolor wash over the entire page. Then, using colored pencils, I added the lighthouse and rocks. Next came white acrylic waves. I needed some balance on the left so out came the rubber stamps!  And finally, the techiques from the book, creating the model and her wardrobe.

I had a blast with this and really want to create more! But, just as in real life, I am finding I have no fashion sense on paper either lol

Here is my second fashion model.

I created this one on a canvas that had been taking up shelf space. Using various paints and papers, I collaged the background.
I created my model and her clothing using some of my favorite colors. And finally stamped the Hans Christian Anderson quote down the right side.

But, as I said, this got my creativity back on track and I was able (once my shoulder stopped hurting) to get back to some needle felting.

He is made entirely of wool other than his alpaca sack and wood staff.  He only stands about 6 inches high.

 

I am very happy with how his face turned out. I really did not want to use glass or plastic beads or eyes and so I felted his eyes in a lovely shade of blue. They are even more intense in person. Like he knows if you have been naughty or nice!  ;-)

 

 
Well, that is all I have done for now but there is a small green frog begging to be released from my brain so hopefully he will begin to make an appearance this weekend. :-)

Santa Claus is almost here

I could say I have been so busy that I just couldn't find the time to blog....but that would be a lie.

 

There are lots of reasons but mainly, I have not felt creative much lately and if I am not creating, well, that doesn't give me much to talk about does it? lol

 

Thankfully, online groups help kick my butt into gear when I get out of sorts.

 

In the Fun_2_Felt yahoo group, I signed up to be a Secret Santa. I love Christmas!!!!!

 

Here is the bunny I made for my recipient....I can't say who yet since she hasn't received it yet  :-)

 

I made a happy bunny! He is grinning from ear to ear....and why not with that huge, delicious carrot to much on!

 

 

He stands about 4 inches tall and was felted entirely from wool (although I have no clue what type as I cannot even remember what I got this wonder shade of brown)

 

 

I also found an adorable crochet pattern at etsy from jennyandteddy and just couldn't resist. So, Holly is now residing with a few bears on my hearth...all anxiously awaiting Santa.  :-)

Fall is Almost here!

I know you think I had forgotten about you. But I didn't. I have just been avoiding my computer. Please don't take it personally....honestly, it had nothing to do with you. Would I lie to you? :-)

Seriously, after working all day long on a computer, the last thing I want to do in my free time is get on a computer. So, although I have been busy in my art room, my computer took the summer off.

I did get a few pages done in my journal (not a lot though, hey, it was summer and I was out playing!)

My flowers did beautifully this year and I really wanted to feature my gorgeous begonia in a journal page. Did you know that begonias have fairies living in them? I didn't either until I downloaded the photos.

Our garden did incredibly well too! So far this year I have made 5 batches of salsa and canned 10 quarts of tomatoes (and spending tomorrow afternoon canning some more)

I love my salsa! So fresh and tangy. I love it so much I created a page to honor it! lol I painted all the ingredients. I then photographed one of my antique Ball jars and printed it onto transparency film for an overlay.

I don't always follow the rules (ok, I rarely follow the rules) but it gives me great prompts for journal ideas. This week we were supposed to create in a way similar to Van Gogh or Monet using at least one neon color. Um, yeah. Sorry, neon is not on my shelf! lol And as for Van Gogh or Monet, love them but still, not me. Once we painted, we were to doodle over the top.

So, I painted a swish with short strokes in fall colors (oops, no neon yellows or pinks to be seen) and then stamped the tree on top (StampaRosa). I did doodle the leaves. :-)

I did not waste my entire summer. I spent every weekend searching for treasures at yard sales!

I found this poor desk for $10. It is solid oak but had seen much better days. It had been stripped of it's stain many years ago and then at some point, some sort of oil had been spilled across half of its top. To add insult to injury, the top was also dotted with cigarette burns. Poor desk.

My original plan was to paint it up and put it out in my garden to hold my herb pots (I am tired of bending over to pick herbs lol)

If you notice on the above pic, their are decorations near the top on each side. Well only 1/3 of an ornament on the right side as most has been broken off.

I wanted to keep this detail so I created a mold from the remaining ornament using sculpey. I then filled the mold with paper clay. (the original decoration is in the middle sitting on a tissue because it still has the nails in it and kept sliding around my desk) The little piece on the right is the remaining portion of the broken ornament.

Here is the dry paperclay reproduction beside the original. The detail is not as sharp but since I was going to paint them both, I didn't think it would matter.

Here is the finished desk. I stained the top a rich mahogony and even though you can sort of still see the oil stain and definitely see the burn marks, it has beautiful character.

Once it was done, I couldn't banish it to the garden so now it resides in my office holding my tv. I think it is much happier than when I found it. :-)

So Little Time - So Many Projects

I was thinking that I had been a slug over the past week but when I got out everything I made this week to photograph it, I realized I really got a lot done! :-)

I am signed up for an ATC swap with the Bad Babies. They are not due until August but I am determined to not get behind on projects this year....so mine are done!!! WooHoo.

Up first, you might say this is Steampunkish....maybe not lol I did the background with alcohol inks and loved the metallic look so I added the watch parts.
The stamps both came from Tim Holtz (yes, I am totally hooked on his stuff right now!)
Now, off in another direction! I love this woman stamp! She is from Posh Impressions and one of my favorites. But I had no clue what I was going to do with her. But sticking with another of my 'resolutions' I dug through my drawer of old ads and found this one for hat patterns. Since my woman isn't wearing one, maybe she needs to make one?

And changing directions AGAIN! I went to Paris....one of my favorite themes. :-)

I just got the Eiffel Tower stamp (Tim Holtz of course lol) and combined it with my Oxford Impressions french stamps. I really like this (and might have to keep it for myself)

So, here I am, Me in 2 swaps at the same time!!! This one is due in mid July.....and I am already done! I am SO on fire!!!! LOL

Using my seaside Oxford Impressions set, I created the bookmark below. There is a grand hotel, deck chairs, seashells stamped on clear acetate with a film border (Tim Holtz) to mimic negatives and the lovely bathing beauty.

I used the fun fur yarn because it has a seaweed look to me.

For my next trick, I went back to my stash of vintage photos. :-)

I tinted it with distress inks and then layered the bookmark with paper scraps.

I distressed some seam binding and bias tape as well and added some beaded dangles. C'mon, who doesn't love danglies? lol

Here is a close-up of the photo. I think grandma looks nice in pink. :-)

But I am not done!!!! There was also a new prompt posted this week for the journal challenge. The theme is Zentangle.

Now, if you have been here long enough, you know that I zentangle. I haven't posted any in a while but I do still dabble...especially when I feel stressed. I have found it to be a great stress reliever!

But I didn't want to do a typical tangle....got enough of those hanging around. I wanted something that worked with a photo. I had this vision of a dancer and zentangles swirling around.

See below what I came up with.

So, that was my week! It looks very exhausting when I look back on it but oddly enough, the time flew by and I had a blast!

Speaking of blasts, tomorrow is July 4th! A day for eating way too much BBQ and blowing things up. I highly doubt this is what our forefathers had in mind lol

Admit One

This week, in my Challenge! online class, the theme was 'Circus'.

Ok, I am the first to admit, I don't like the circus. It has always had an overall creepy vibe to me.

But...

I am always up for a challenge. And this certainly was for me!

I have no 'circus' rubber stamps and yet this project seemed to be calling out for them. So, being the adventurous artist soul that I am, I began thinking....what stamp do I have that might work in a circus setting? When you have as many stamps as I do, this thinking takes a lot of time lol

I did finally remember that I have an elephant. He is not all fancy or anything, more like out on the Serengeti, but that was ok. And I wanted a tent! No tent stamp, gonna have to draw that. Hey, I could put the elephant in the tent! Wow, that takes up all of 1/4 of my page! lol

Ok, I need performers! So, I began digging through one of my 'people' boxes...not the Victorian/vintage one....the other one. :-)

Who pops up first but my poor overweight woman that for some reason I have put up on a high wire before...might as well put her up there again, she has experience! Digging deeper into the box, I found her a couple friends.

Now to put this whole side show together!

As I said, I drew the tent on watercolor paper. Then painted it with twinkling H2Os (it is the circus after all...we need some sparkle). I then stamped the elephant on the journal page, colored around here where the opening of the tent would be, sponged on a cloudy sky with chalks, and painted the grass and path before gluing on the tent.

I stamped all the people onto white card stock and using Twinkling H2Os, Staedtler water color pencils and Prismacolor pencils, I gave them life.

Placement was tricky due to the size of my people and the size of my page (only 5 x 8.5). I didn't quite know what to do with my dancing girls....then I decided they must be midgets (oops, "little people") so they could go in front of my high wire act!

In the above close up, you might be able to tell that the woman is wearing a tulle tutu and is standing on a floss wire stretched tight under her feet.

But let us not forget the Christmas in July tag swap from last week! I finished my third tag. I again used a leather tag from my yard sale stash. I stamped the angel/cherub and noticed that she is hold what looks like a bar of soap that says "Pears". Since I didn't really know what I was going to do with her, I took her suggestion and gave her some pears lol

I also added some vintage sheet music and gold cording.

And since I was STILL in a tag mood. I used one of Tim Holtz jumbo tags and played around with Distress Inks and walnut ink to get a nicely stained background. I added bits of book pages and several stamps done in browns so they really sink into the background. The girl is a stamp from Tim Holtz.

The rest of my time was spent watching my garden grow! I actually harvested my first sugar snap peas of the year! It is going to be a while for any of our other produce but it sure got me in the mood for more fresh veggies! :-)

More great finds!

Last week I mentioned the fabulous photo album I found at an estate/yard sale. What I didn't tell you was that I also picked up a large box full of leather 'tags'. They appear to be upholstery swatches. They are about 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 and there are a couple shades of brown, a couple burgundys, a nice dark green and a couple different blues. There were also some large scraps of leather tossed in there too. There is about 3 pounds of leather.... over 100 leather tags! I paid $5!!! This is going to be a fun stash to play with!!! :-)

Since Tim Holtz put me into tag mode this week, I thought I would play around with them.

I stamped directly onto the leather and it took the ink beautifully! I then colored the boy's face with prismacolor pencils. Since it was a dark brown tag, he has a sort of ghostly look but I like it. I then highlighted the text with prismacolors as well.

Tags must be the in thing this month because no sooner had I completed the one above when one of the Bad Babies suggested a Christmas tag swap. Oh yeah! I am all for that one!!!

I grabbed some more leather tags and began playing.
I used my Zutter to punch the line of holes on the left and threaded in some old lace.
I stamped the children on glossy cardstock then aged them with Distress Inks.

Here I stamped Santa on matte white cardstock and colored him with prismacolor pencils. I then aged the image with Distress Inks.
I stamped a string of snowflakes with white acrylic paint directly onto the leather. Then I layered a bit of music from an old hymnal (a yard sale find from a couple years ago...50 cents!)

Add some dark red buttons, some poofy yarn saved from a gift and some rusty jingle bells and you have a fun new Christmas tag!

But tags are not the only thing I did this week! I have been a busy girl! lol

Vintage Photo Find

A couple weeks ago I found an awesome treasure at an estate sale....an old photo album....filled with old photos! They range in date from the 1920s - 40s (based on cars and fashions in the photos)

What an incredible find! On one hand, it is sort of sad that no one in the family wanted these glimpses of days gone by but on the other hand, now they will have a new life!

As I pulled these beauties from the ancient album (and I do mean PULLED as they were glued in with what appears to be old type school glue!) I was witness to graduations, marriages, births, new homes... It made me want to know these people better but alas, that will never happen so I must only imagine who they are and the lives they lead.

As I have been pondering what exactly to do with all these many snapshots of time (over 50 of them!!!) I saw Tim Holtz latest blog post....about aging vintage photos!!! Woohoooo!

Normally I would not destroy an original photo, but this one actually had a double so I chose the one that was damaged and played around. As you can see, it is creased and has some discoloration.

Below you can see how I 'aged' it even more using Distressed Inks. I thought the little guy looked dapper in Pine Needles green and I tinted his wagon with Barn Door red. I then darkened the rest of the photo with layers of Old Paper, Tea Dye and Walnut Stain. I made sure to enhance the creases in the upper right (just cause I love that look lol)

I then created the tag. I smudged Distress Inks over the tag and spritzed with water so they would bleed. I then darked the edges and corners with Tie Dye and Walnut Stain and spritzed again. I stamped random images in black knowing that only bits would be showing. I stamped the bingo card (Tim Holtz from Stampers Anonymous "Life Possibilities") directly onto the photo using Memories dye ink, Chestnut. The 'childish' text is from a sheet of scrap book paper I bought over 10 years ago and just keep tearing out sections when I need them. (I am down to about 3" square of that 12x12 page lol)

I added an old gold button that I aged with alcohol inks and finally more antique buttons threaded onto ribbon to finish it all off.

And lastly, my 1 year old camera died...which needless to say upset me very much! What was worse, I found out that this is a known problem and the company doesn't care! They make lot of money having you ship your camera, they do a minor adjustment and then charge you an arm and a leg to get it back!

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me! I will never ever buy or deal with a Nikon product ever again!

Long story short, I bought a Canon! And as much as I loved the features on the Nikon, I am over the moon the features on my new Canon SX150!!!

I love playing around in photoshop but sometimes it is time consuming. My camera can do something that I had to manually do before......leave my subject in color and make the rest black and white!

This is one of the roses in my garden (which just started blooming this week!)

Dark Shadows

I haven't been doing much in the art department lately. But I do have my garden planted! And all my annuals potted!!! And my yard, deck and patio all ready for summer fun! :-)

The only art project I have done recently is for a Dark Shadows postcard swap at the Bad Babies yahoo group.

I have to say, I have not seen the movie yet. I love Johnny Depp but, I'm sorry, Jonathan Frid will always be the one and only Barnabas! I had to make sure he was part of this postcard. I also wanted to include other aspects of the show.

I mentally went round and round on this one and finally decided, the only way I could include everything I wanted was to go digital.

If you look closely you will find a howling wolf and a ghost....as well as the obvious vampire and drops of blood. :-0

I have a full moon and creepy cobwebs...the only thing missing that was part of my favorite storyline is the dollhouse...but since the dollhouse was an exact replica of Collinwood, maybe I did include it. ;-)
